Revolutions have often started in the dark corners of bars. Brilliant minds met over beer to plot the overthrow of oppressive imperialists or brutal dictators. On Tuesday, December 6, inside the Washington, D.C., bar, Meridian Pint, revolution looked nothing like that.

More than 75 D.C.-area homebrewers—people who brew and ferment their own beer at home—packed into the basement of the popular bar. They talked about barley, hops, and original gravity; shared their own creations; and generally got nerdy about beer.

It would seem innocuous if they weren’t part of a larger movement that is changing the entire brewing industry one community at a time.
